Saving Gaia ad again

choongyong.koh June 10th, 2008

So someone did complain to Mediacorp about this ad. (Wanbao article over the weekend) However, the response from Mediacorp (see insert at the bottom right corner) seems tell us that it is ok to have gory images on all other TV channels except for the kids’ channel.

Is that the same position that MDA holds? What about TCS 8 and TCS 5?

    Wow … gruesome! That picture.

Yep, it should be censored. We Singaporeans are the protected species. Nothing too sexy, nothing too bloody.

It is not that I advocate censorship for matured audience. I think if you reach a certain level of maturity, which in our society is marked against you age, you should be allowed freedom to choose what you see.

However, the case is different for kids who have yet to understand what all the blood means. My son was luckier, he simply repeat “very dirty hor, the boy boy” whenever the ad comes on.

The ad came on at prime time on TCS 8. This is when families come together after dinner to relax and enjoy a nice TV show. Imagine, one minute you are marveling at the Chinese standards of our secondary school students in 中文智多星 and the next minute you are treated with bloody and violent images that don’t convey any message, it is just not the way to go.

The ad makes no sense anyway. Or maybe I don’t get the point. What’s the point about saving the environment and cutting off the brain of a poor child? No link really…
