The next SG PM

I want the next SG PM to be a web2.0 junkie! | the(new)mediaslut

As much as I am for the Web2.0 revolution, I don’t think our present PM understands it very well when he said that he needs to know who the audience is to be able to get to them to correct any mis-information.

Interesting idea though, from the blog post linked above:

Policies will be approved Digg style by the people, for the people, with the people.

Doing things Digg style is definitely a lot more efficient and more reflective of the sentiments (amongst the net-savvy citizens).

Digg can be used to be a rough gauge to what people think of the policies. You could +, - or put a comment etc..

However, there are some policies that are necessary but not popular though.

Yes, Digg is a good way to get the general sentiments the crowd has on a certain topic.

As for policies that are deemed necessary (but not popular), it is really a judgement call. Some might argue that ERP is a necessary policy in Singapore, but does it really solve the congestion problem? Some might say that GST is necessary so that the government can afford to help the poor, but is that the only way to achieve the goal?

Probably given a Digg style way of public consultation, better decisions can be made on policies, instead of modifying the policy after being implemented. Think the recent ruling on cabbies picking up passengers in the CBD area.

Anyway, this is all wishful thinking. If the current thinking is that a YouTube political advertisement == eventual political corruption, I don’t put a lot of hope for the PM, or the next PM, to be someone who understands what Web2.0 is all about.
